Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is one of India's most affordable government social security initiatives. It offers a life-saving accident insurance safety net to low-income families and working citizens for a nominal annual premium of just ₹20. In the event of an accidental demise or permanent total disability, the scheme provides ₹2,00,000 in immediate financial relief directly to the nominee or insured individual.
Launched as part of the Jan Suraksha tri-scheme umbrella, PMSBY is administered through public and private sector general insurance companies in partnership with commercial banks, regional rural banks, and India Post Payments Bank. The coverage spans one year from 1st June to 31st May and renews automatically every year through a simple auto-debit facility from your linked savings bank account. All Indian bank account holders between the ages of 18 and 70 are eligible to enroll with no complex medical tests required.
The compensation under PMSBY is paid out based on the severity of the accident: 1. Accidental Death: ₹2,00,000 paid to the registered nominee. 2. Total & Irrecoverable Loss of Both Eyes, Both Hands, or Both Feet: ₹2,00,000 paid to the policyholder. 3. Total & Irrecoverable Loss of Sight of One Eye and Loss of Use of One Hand/Foot: ₹2,00,000 paid to the policyholder. 4. Total & Irrecoverable Loss of Sight of One Eye or Loss of Use of One Hand/Foot (Partial Permanent Disability): ₹1,00,000 paid to the policyholder. Note: PMSBY is strictly an accidental death and disability policy. It does not cover natural deaths (for natural death coverage, see PMJJBY) or routine hospitalization medical bills.
To enroll in PMSBY, you must fulfill the following criteria: • Age Limit: Must have completed 18 years and must not be older than 70 years. • Bank Account: Must hold an individual savings bank account or post office savings account with a participating bank. • Auto-Debit Consent: Must provide one-time written or digital consent authorizing the bank to auto-debit ₹20 annually. • Single Account Rule: An individual can join PMSBY through only one bank account. If enrolled through multiple accounts, the claim is payable only once up to ₹2 Lakh, and extra premiums paid are forfeited.
Enrolling in PMSBY is virtually paperless if done via banking apps. If applying at a bank branch, keep these ready: 1. Copy of Bank Passbook or Account Details. 2. Aadhaar Card copy (to establish identity and link KYC). 3. Duly filled PMSBY Consent-cum-Declaration Enrollment Form. 4. Nominee Information (Full name, date of birth, relationship, and Aadhaar/contact number).
- Savings Bank Account / Post Office Account passbook
- Aadhaar Card
- Consent-cum-Declaration form for Auto-Debit
- Nominee Details (Name, Relationship, Aadhaar/ID proof)
- Active Mobile Number
You can enroll in PMSBY through any of the following 3 quick methods: Method 1 — Via Internet Banking / Mobile Banking App (Fastest): Log in to your bank's mobile app (SBI YONO, PNB One, HDFC, ICICI, BoB, Canara, IPPB, etc.). Navigate to the 'Services' / 'Insurance' / 'Social Security Schemes' tab. Select 'Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana', verify your pre-filled personal details, nominate a beneficiary, confirm the ₹20 auto-debit consent, and click Submit. Your policy certificate is generated instantly. Method 2 — Via Bank Branch / Post Office: Visit your local bank branch or post office. Ask for the 1-page PMSBY Enrollment Form. Fill in your savings account number, Aadhaar number, and nominee details. Sign the auto-debit authorization section and hand it over to the bank officer. Method 3 — Via SMS / Net Banking Banking Alerts: Many banks send automated activation SMS prompts where replying with 'YES <Code>' activates the policy directly from your linked account balance.
The policy period runs from 1st June of each year to 31st May of the following year. Auto-debit renewal takes place annually between 25th May and 31st May. Ensure you maintain at least ₹20 in your account before May 31 to avoid policy lapses.
• Not maintaining a minimum balance of ₹20 in the linked bank account during the last week of May, causing auto-debit failure and policy termination. • Forgetting to update nominee details (in case of an accidental death, an unnamed nominee delays the claim payout through legal succession procedures). • Joining PMSBY through two or three different banks expecting double or triple payouts (government guidelines strictly cap the benefit to ₹2 Lakh per individual across all banks). • Waiting too long after an accident to file a claim — claims should be submitted to the bank within 30 days along with the FIR and post-mortem / medical disability certificate.
Always ensure your bank account is active and has valid nominee KYC attached. Download and save the PMSBY Acknowledgement Slip from your net banking portal or jansuraksha.gov.in and share the policy details with your family members so they know about the coverage.
