Under the PMUY scheme, deposit-free LPG connections are primarily issued in the name of the adult female members of Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. Originally targeting 50 million connections, the scheme was massively expanded due to extreme demand (Ujjwala 2.0) to ensure deep rural penetration. Beyond merely handing over the connection, Ujjwala 2.0 covers the cost of the first cylinder refill and provides a free hotplate (gas stove).
Normally, adopting an LPG framework involves depositing heavy security fees for the cylinder and regulator, alongside paying for the gas and the stove. PMUY completely absorbs this upfront cost hurdle. The government provides financial assistance of Rs. 1600 per connection, covering the security deposit of the cylinder and the pressure regulator, suraksha hose, and installation charges.
The applicant must categorically be a woman above the age of 18 years. She must belong to specific marginalized categories: either a BPL household, an SC/ST household, a beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), or an inhabitant of river islands or forest dwelling communities. It is absolutely mandatory that no other LPG connection exists under the name of any family member residing in the same household.
The process necessitates strict structural documentation. The primary document is the Aadhaar Card, acting as the ultimate identity and address proof. Secondly, a 14-point declaration in a prescribed format validating BPL status and lack of pre-existing connections. Furthermore, a valid Ration Card mapping the entire family structure ensures no duplicates exist within the same house. Finally, an active savings bank account with clearly defined IFSC codes is essential to receive subsequent ongoing cylinder subsidies through the PAHAL DBT architecture.

Applying for the Ujjwala scheme is primarily facilitated through local oil distributions. Step 1: Eligible female applicants must visit their nearest LPG distributor (Indane, HP, or Bharat Gas). Step 2: Procure the highly detailed KYC form for PMUY available physically at the agency or download it from the official PMUY portal. Step 3: Fill out applicant details, strictly mentioning the 14-digit Aadhaar parameters of all adult household members. Step 4: Attach the photographs, bank passbook copies, and ration card photocopies, then submit. Step 5: The agency runs algorithmic deduplication checks through the central oil company portals. If cleared, the connection is instantly sanctioned and installed at your physical residence.
The scheme, initially featuring strict closure windows, now operates on a rolling continuous basis under the expanded Ujjwala 2.0 banner. Households that recently relocated or migrated can also immediately apply by submitting simple self-declarations regarding their residential status.
The absolute most common reason for rejection is the accidental presence of an existing LPG connection. Many times, rural households live in joint families where the patriarch might already possess a connection; the system detects this via shared ration cards and rejects the new applicant.
Ensure all family members listed on your ration card have their Aadhaar numbers linked tightly. Any unlinked member forces manual interventions.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched largely to safeguard the health of women and children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel – Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). For decades, a significant portion of rural India heavily relied on traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes, continuously exposing them to severe indoor air pollution—a major cause of respiratory illnesses.
