PM-eBus Sewa Scheme (Urban Green Mobility)

The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme is a landmark green public transportation initiative launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India. With a total estimated budget of ₹57,613 Crore (including ₹20,000 Crore in direct Central Government financial assistance), the scheme deploys 10,000 modern, zero-emission electric buses across 169 Indian cities on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, delivering reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly city transit to millions of daily urban commuters.

Rapid urbanization has overwhelmed public transit in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, worsening traffic congestion and air pollution. PM-eBus Sewa addresses this challenge by prioritizing cities with populations between 3 Lakh and 40 Lakh that lack organized public bus networks (including all state capitals, union territories, and hilly North-Eastern regions). The scheme funds behind-the-meter high-capacity electrical charging substations, bus depot modernization, intelligent transport management systems (ITMS), and automated digital ticketing.

Modern Depot & Power Infrastructure: Central subsidies upgrade municipal bus depots with automated washing bays, smart charging points, and grid substations. 5. Job Creation in Clean Tech: Generates tens of thousands of direct jobs for electric vehicle drivers, technicians, depot managers, and smart transport software engineers.

The scheme operates on two levels: • For Citizens & Commuters: Open to ALL residents and commuters in 169 notified cities across India. Concessional or free bus passes are available for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities as per municipal state transport rules. • For City Selection: Cities with populations of 3 Lakh to 40 Lakh (Census 2011), including capitals of North-Eastern and Hill States (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, J&K, Ladakh) and Union Territories.

For daily commuting and pass issuance: 1. For Daily Travel: Cash, UPI, or National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). 2. For Student Concessional Pass: Student ID Card & Bonafide School/College Certificate. 3. For Senior Citizen / Divyangjan Pass: Aadhaar Card, Senior Citizen ID, or UDID Card. 4. Passport-size Photograph (for physical pass generation).

• National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) or Metro Card (for cashless tap-and-go bus travel)
• Student ID / Age Proof Certificate (for student concessional monthly bus passes)

Accessing PM-eBus Sewa services in your city: Step 1 — Locate Nearby Bus Route: Use your city's Smart City Transit App or visit local bus terminals to view electric bus routes and schedules. Step 2 — Boarding the e-Bus: Board the green e-bus from designated bus stops with low-floor easy boarding. Step 3 — Digital Payment: Tap your NCMC card, scan QR codes via UPI, or pay cash for automated paperless tickets. Step 4 — Applying for Monthly Passes: Visit the City Transport Corporation counter or portal to apply for subsidized monthly student or commuter passes.

The scheme is being rolled out in phases across 169 target cities through 2037, with Central support provided for 10 years of operations.
