Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the world's largest financial inclusion program, launched in August 2014. Its core goal is to bring every unbanked Indian household into the formal banking system. Under PMJDY, any Indian citizen โ even a child above 10 years โ can open a savings account at any bank with zero balance. The account comes with a free RuPay debit card, accident insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh, and life insurance of Rs 30,000. PMJDY accounts are also the primary channel through which the government sends direct benefit transfers (DBT) for schemes like PM-KISAN, LPG subsidy, and MGNREGA wages.
A PMJDY account is far more than a basic savings account. It is a gateway to the entire formal financial system. The free RuPay debit card gives you access to ATMs nationwide and enables digital payments at shops. The built-in accident insurance of Rs 2 lakh (enhanced in 2018) activates automatically when you use the RuPay card at least once every 90 days. After satisfactory account operation for 6 months, you become eligible for an overdraft (emergency credit) of up to Rs 10,000 โ with preference given to women account holders. All government subsidy payments โ LPG, fertilisers, scholarships, wages โ are transferred directly into your Jan Dhan account, eliminating middlemen.
Any Indian citizen aged 10 years or above is eligible to open a PMJDY account. There is no income limit, no occupation restriction, and no minimum balance requirement. Even if you already have a bank account elsewhere, you can open a PMJDY account โ though the overdraft and insurance benefits apply to the designated PMJDY account. People in rural and semi-urban areas with no prior banking access are the primary target group.
Opening a Jan Dhan account requires minimal paperwork. Your Aadhaar Card serves as both identity and address proof. If you do not have Aadhaar, any officially valid document (OVD) such as Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, NREGA Job Card, or a letter from a gazetted officer is accepted. A passport-size photograph is also needed. No income proof is required.
- Aadhaar Card (or any officially valid document)
- Passport size photograph
Step 1: Visit the nearest branch of any government or private sector bank, or a Bank Mitra (Business Correspondent) in your village. Step 2: Ask for the PMJDY account opening form. Step 3: Fill in your personal details and submit with Aadhaar card and photograph. Step 4: Your account will be opened the same day in most cases. Step 5: You will receive a passbook and a RuPay debit card (delivered within 15 days). Minors aged 10-18 can open accounts jointly with a parent or guardian.
PMJDY is a permanent, ongoing scheme with no closing date. You can open an account any time throughout the year at any bank branch or Business Correspondent point.
Many Jan Dhan account holders never activate their RuPay card, which means the Rs 2 lakh accident insurance never activates. Always do at least one RuPay card transaction (ATM or POS) every 90 days to keep the insurance active. Another issue is not linking Aadhaar to the account โ without Aadhaar linkage, DBT payments from government schemes get held up.
Use your RuPay card for at least one transaction every 90 days to keep your accident insurance active. Link your Aadhaar and mobile number to the account to receive all government DBT payments without delays. Maintain regular transaction history for 6 months to unlock the overdraft facility.
