The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in is India's one-stop platform for all Central Government scholarships. Instead of applying separately to different ministries, students can apply for 50+ scholarships through a single online portal. NSP scholarships cover students from Class 1 right up to PhD level, across all categories โ SC, ST, OBC, minorities (Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains), and meritorious students from economically weaker sections. Key scholarships available on NSP include the Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships from the Ministry of Social Justice, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) for Class 9 students.
The scholarship amount varies by scheme and level of study. For pre-matric students (Classes 1-10), scholarships range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,500 per year. For post-matric students (Class 11 onwards), the amounts range from Rs 3,500 to Rs 20,000 per year, plus course fees reimbursement in many cases. Students pursuing professional courses like engineering and medicine receive higher amounts. The NMMS scholarship provides Rs 12,000 per year (Rs 1,000/month) to meritorious students from low-income families throughout Classes 9 to 12. All amounts are transferred directly to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account.
Eligibility varies by specific scholarship. Generally: the student must be enrolled in a recognised school, college, or university. Annual family income must typically be below Rs 2.5 lakh for most Central scholarships (Rs 1 lakh for some). The student must belong to SC, ST, OBC, or minority community for category-specific scholarships. Marks criteria also apply โ usually a minimum of 50% to 60% in the previous class. EWS students from general category can apply for merit-cum-means scholarships regardless of community.
The core documents needed are: Aadhaar Card of the student (and parent for minor students), Income Certificate from a gazetted officer or revenue department, Caste/Community Certificate for category scholarships, previous year's Marksheet, a Bonafide/Enrollment Certificate from your school or college, and a Bank Account passbook in the student's name (linked with Aadhaar).

Step 5: Upload all required documents in the specified format and size. Step 6: Submit the application and note your Application ID for future tracking. Step 7: Your school/college authority verifies the application online before it reaches the ministry for final approval.
NSP applications typically open in July-August for the academic year. The last date for fresh applications is usually October-November, and for renewals is December-January. Exact dates vary each year โ check scholarships.gov.in for the current year's schedule.
Applying late is the most common mistake โ NSP deadlines are strict and portals are often closed after the cutoff. Another issue is submitting blurry or oversized document scans, which leads to rejection by the institute verifier. Students also often forget to get their application verified by their school or college within the deadline โ without institute verification, the application is automatically rejected.
Apply as soon as the portal opens โ do not wait until the last week as servers get overloaded near the deadline. Ensure your bank account is in your own name and linked with Aadhaar. Immediately inform your school or college principal that you have applied on NSP and request them to verify your application online within the stipulated time.
